Judá y Simeón conquistan la tierra
1 Después de la muerte de Josué, los israelitas le preguntaron al Señor:
—¿Cuál de las tribus debe ser la primera en atacar a los cananeos?
2 El Señor contestó:
—Judá, porque yo le he dado la victoria sobre la tierra.
3 Entonces los hombres de Judá les dijeron a sus parientes de la tribu de Simeón: «Vengan con nosotros a luchar contra los cananeos que viven en el territorio que se nos asignó. Después nosotros los ayudaremos a ustedes a conquistar su territorio». Así que los hombres de Simeón fueron con los de Judá.
4 Cuando los hombres de Judá atacaron, el Señorles dio la victoria sobre los cananeos y los ferezeos, y mataron a diez mil guerreros enemigos en la ciudad de Bezec.5 Mientras estaban en Bezec, se toparon con el rey Adoni-bezec y lucharon contra él, y derrotaron a los cananeos y a los ferezeos. 6 Adoni-bezec escapó, pero los israelitas pronto lo capturaron y le cortaron los pulgares de las manos y los dedos gordos de los pies.
7 Adoni-bezec dijo: «Una vez yo tuve setenta reyes sin los pulgares de las manos y los dedos gordos de los pies, comiendo migajas debajo de mi mesa. Ahora Dios me devolvió lo que les hice». Y se lo llevaron a Jerusalén, donde murió.
8 Los hombres de Judá atacaron a Jerusalén y la tomaron; mataron a todos sus habitantes y prendieron fuego a la ciudad. 9 Luego descendieron para combatir contra los cananeos que vivían en la zona montañosa, en el Neguev y en las colinas occidentales.[a] 10 Judá marchó contra los cananeos en Hebrón (antiguamente llamada Quiriat-arba) y derrotó a las fuerzas de Sesai, Ahimán y Talmai.
11 De allí salieron a luchar contra los habitantes de la ciudad de Debir (antiguamente llamada Quiriat-sefer). 12 Caleb dijo: «Daré a mi hija Acsa en matrimonio al que ataque y tome Quiriat-sefer». 13 Otoniel, hijo de Cenaz, un hermano menor de Caleb, fue quien conquistó la ciudad; así que Acsa pasó a ser esposa de Otoniel.
14 Cuando Acsa se casó con Otoniel, ella insistió en que él le pidiera[b] un campo a Caleb, su padre. Mientras ella se bajaba de su burro, Caleb le preguntó:
—¿Qué te pasa?
15 Ella contestó:
—Concédeme otro obsequio. Ya me regalaste tierras en el Neguev; ahora te ruego que también me des manantiales.
Entonces Caleb le entregó tanto los manantiales de la parte alta como los de la parte baja.
16 Cuando los miembros de la tribu de Judá salieron de Jericó —la ciudad de las palmeras—, los ceneos (que eran descendientes del suegro de Moisés) los acompañaron al desierto de Judá y se establecieron entre la gente del lugar, cerca de la ciudad de Arad, en el Neguev.
Israel no conquista toda la tierra
19 El Señor estaba con los de Judá, y ellos tomaron posesión de la zona montañosa; pero no lograron expulsar a los habitantes de las llanuras, quienes tenían carros de guerra hechos de hierro.20 Caleb recibió la ciudad de Hebrón, tal como Moisés le había prometido, y expulsó a todos sus habitantes, que eran descendientes de los tres hijos de Anac.
21 Sin embargo, la tribu de Benjamín no logró expulsar a los jebuseos, quienes vivían en Jerusalén. Por eso, hasta el día de hoy, los jebuseos viven en Jerusalén junto con el pueblo de Benjamín.
22 Los descendientes de José atacaron la ciudad de Betel, y el Señor estuvo con ellos. 23 Enviaron espías a Betel (antes conocida como Luz),24 quienes abordaron a un hombre que salía del poblado y le dijeron: «Muéstranos cómo entrar en la ciudad, y tendremos compasión de ti».25 Entonces él les mostró una vía de acceso, y ellos mataron a todos en la ciudad, menos a ese hombre y a su familia.26 Más tarde, el hombre se trasladó a la tierra de los hititas, donde estableció una ciudad a la que llamó Luz. Este nombre lo conserva hasta el día de hoy.
27 La tribu de Manasés no logró expulsar a la gente que vivía en Bet-sán,[e]Taanac, Dor, Ibleam, Meguido y en todos los asentamientos vecinos, porque los cananeos estaban decididos a quedarse en esa región.28 Con el tiempo, cuando los israelitas se fortalecieron, obligaron a los cananeos a trabajar como esclavos, pero nunca los expulsaron de la tierra por completo.
29 La tribu de Efraín no logró expulsar a los cananeos que vivían en Gezer, así que los cananeos siguieron viviendo allí, en medio de los de Efraín.
30 La tribu de Zabulón no logró expulsar a los habitantes de Quitrón y de Naalal, así que los cananeos siguieron viviendo en medio de los de Zabulón, pero los cananeos fueron obligados a trabajar como esclavos para ellos.
31 La tribu de Aser no logró expulsar a los habitantes de Aco, Sidón, Ahlab, Aczib, Helba, Afec ni Rehob. 32 Así que los de Aser se establecieron entre los cananeos, quienes controlaban la tierra, debido a que no lograron expulsarlos.
33 Asimismo, la tribu de Neftalí no logró expulsar a los habitantes de Bet-semes ni a los de Bet-anat. Así que Neftalí se estableció entre los cananeos, quienes controlaban la tierra. Sin embargo, los habitantes de Bet-semes y los de Bet-anat fueron obligados a trabajar como esclavos para la gente de Neftalí.
34 En cuanto a la tribu de Dan, los amorreos los obligaron a retirarse a la zona montañosa y no los dejaban descender a las llanuras. 35 Los amorreos estaban decididos a quedarse en el monte Heres, en Ajalón y en Saalbim; pero cuando los descendientes de José aumentaron en fuerza, obligaron a los amorreos a trabajar como esclavos.36 La frontera de los amorreos iba desde el paso de los Escorpiones[f]hasta Sela y desde allí se extendía hacia arriba.

1 Now after the mot Yehoshua it came to pass, that the Bnei Yisroel asked Hashem, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Kena’ani first, to fight against him [them]?
2 And Hashem said, Yehudah shall go up; hinei, I have delivered HaAretz into his yad.
3 And Yehudah said unto Shim’on his brother, Come up with me into my goral (lot), and we will fight against the Kena’ani; and I likewise will go with thee into thy goral. So Shim’on went with him.
4 And Yehudah went up; and Hashem delivered the Kena’ani and the Perizzi into their yad; and they struck them down at Bezek ten thousand ish.
5 And they found Adoni-Bezek at Bezek; and they fought against him, and they struck down the Kena’ani and the Perizzi.
6 But Adoni-Bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his big toes.
7 And Adoni-Bezek said, Threescore and ten melachim, having their thumbs and their big toes cut off, picked up their scraps under my shulchan; as I have done, so Elohim hath requited me. And they brought him to Yerushalayim, and there he died.
8 Now the Bnei Yehudah had fought against Yerushalayim, and had taken it, and put it to the edge of the cherev, and set eish to the Ir.
9 And afterward the Bnei Yehudah went down to fight against the Kena’ani that dwelt in the har, and in the Negev, and in the western foothills.
10 And Yehudah went against the Kena’ani that dwelt in Chevron; (now the shem of Chevron formerly was Kiryat-Arba); and they struck down Sheshai, and Achiman, and Talmai.
11 And from thence Yehudah went against the inhabitants of Devir; and the shem of Devir formerly was Yiryat-Sepher;
12 And Kalev said, He that striketh Yiryat-Sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my bat as isha.
13 And Otniel ben Kenaz, Kalev’s younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his bat as isha.
14 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she urged him to ask of her av the sadeh; and she dismounted her donkey; and Kalev said unto her, What wilt thou?
15 And she said unto him, Give me bracha; since thou hast given me eretz hanegev; give me also gullot mayim. And Kalev gave her the upper gullot and the lower gullot.
16 And the Bnei Keni, khoten Moshe, went up out of the Ir HaTemarim with the Bnei Yehudah into the midbar of Yehudah, which lieth in the Negev of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
17 And Yehudah went with Shim’on his brother, and they struck down the Kena’ani that inhabited Tzephat, and utterly destroyed it. And the shem of the Ir was called Chormah.
18 Also Yehudah took Azah (Gaza) and the territory thereof, and Askelon and the territory thereof, and Ekron and the territory thereof.
19 And Hashem was with Yehudah; and he possessed the inhabitants of the hill country; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the [broad] valley [areas], because they had chariots of barzel (iron).
20 And they gave Chevron unto Kalev, just as Moshe promised; and he expelled from there the three Bnei Anak.
21 And the Bnei Binyamin did not drive out the Yevusi that inhabited Yerushalayim; and the Yevusi dwell with the Bnei Binyamin in Yerushalayim unto this day.
22 And Bais Yosef, they also went up against Beit-El; and Hashem was with them.
23 And Bais Yosef sent shomrim (spies) to Beit-El. (Now the shem of the Ir formerly was Luz.)
24 And the shomrim saw an ish come forth out of the Ir, and they said unto him, Show us, now, the way to enter into the Ir, and we will show thee chesed.
25 And when he showed them the way to enter into the Ir, they struck down the Ir with the edge of the cherev; but they spared the ish and all his mishpakhah.
26 And the ish went into the eretz HaChittim, and built an Ir, and called the shem thereof Luz; which is the shem thereof unto this day.
27 Neither did Menasheh drive out the Beit-Sh’an and her villages, nor Ta’nach and her villages, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her villages, nor the inhabitants of Yivleam and her villages, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her villages; so the Kena’ani were determined to dwell in that land.
28 And it came to pass, when Yisroel was chazak, that they put the Kena’ani to forced labor, and did not utterly drive them out.
29 Neither did Ephrayim drive out the Kena’ani that dwelt in Gezer; but the Kena’ani dwelt in Gezer among them.
30 Neither did Zevulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Kena’ani dwelt among them, and became subject to forced labor.
31 Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Akko, nor the inhabitants of Tzidon, nor of Achlav, nor of Achziv, nor of Chelbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rechov;
32 But the Asheri dwelt among the Kena’ani, the inhabitants of HaAretz: for they did not drive them out.
33 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beit-Shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beit-Anat; but he dwelt among the Kena’ani, the inhabitants of HaAretz: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beit-Shemesh and of Beit-Anat were unto them subject to forced labor.
34 And the Emori forced the Bnei Dan into the hill country; for they would not allow them to come down into the [broad] valley [area];
35 But the Emori would dwell in Mt Cheres in Ayalon, and in Shaalvim: yet the yad Bais Yosef prevailed, so that they became subject to forced labor.
36 And the territory of the Emori was from the Akrabbim Ascent and the Rock, upward.

A Guerra contra os Cananeus Restantes
1 Depois da morte de Josué, os israelitas perguntaram ao Senhor: “Quem de nós será o primeiro a atacar os cananeus?”
2 O Senhor respondeu: “Judá será o primeiro; eu entreguei a terra em suas mãos”.
3 Então os homens de Judá disseram aos seus irmãos de Simeão: “Venham conosco ao território que nos foi designado por sorteio, e lutemos contra os cananeus. Iremos com vocês para o território que lhes foi dado”. E os homens de Simeão foram com eles.
4 Quando os homens de Judá atacaram, o Senhorentregou os cananeus e os ferezeus nas mãos deles, e eles mataram dez mil homens em Bezeque. 5 Foi lá que encontraram Adoni-Bezeque, lutaram contra ele e derrotaram os cananeus e os ferezeus. 6 Adoni-Bezeque fugiu, mas eles o perseguiram e o prenderam, e lhe cortaram os polegares das mãos e dos pés.
7 Então Adoni-Bezeque disse: “Setenta reis com os polegares das mãos e dos pés cortados apanhavam migalhas debaixo da minha mesa. Agora Deus me retribuiu aquilo que lhes fiz”. Eles o levaram para Jerusalém, onde morreu.
8 Os homens de Judá atacaram também Jerusalém e a conquistaram. Mataram seus habitantes ao fio da espada e a incendiaram.
9 Depois disso eles desceram para lutar contra os cananeus que viviam na serra, no Neguebe e na Sefelá[a]. 10 Avançaram contra os cananeus que viviam em Hebrom, anteriormente chamada Quiriate-Arba, e derrotaram Sesai, Aimã e Talmai.
11 Dali avançaram contra o povo que morava em Debir, anteriormente chamada Quiriate-Sefer. 12 E disse Calebe: “Darei minha filha Acsa em casamento ao homem que atacar e conquistar Quiriate-Sefer”. 13 Otoniel, filho de Quenaz, irmão mais novo de Calebe, conquistou a cidade; por isso Calebe lhe deu sua filha Acsa por mulher.
14 Um dia, quando já vivia com Otoniel, ela o persuadiu[b] a pedir um campo ao pai dela. Assim que ela desceu do jumento, Calebe lhe perguntou: “O que você quer?”
15 Ela respondeu: “Dê-me um presente. Já que o senhor me deu terras no Neguebe, dê-me também fontes de água”. E Calebe lhe deu as fontes superiores e as inferiores.
16 Os descendentes do sogro de Moisés, o queneu, saíram da Cidade das Palmeiras[c] com os homens de Judá e passaram a viver entre o povo do deserto de Judá, no Neguebe, perto de Arade.
17 Depois os homens de Judá foram com seus irmãos de Simeão e derrotaram os cananeus que viviam em Zefate, e destruíram totalmente a cidade. Por essa razão ela foi chamada Hormá[d]. 18 Os homens de Judá também conquistaram[e]Gaza, Ascalom e Ecrom, com os seus territórios.
19 O Senhor estava com os homens de Judá. Eles ocuparam a serra central, mas não conseguiram expulsar os habitantes dos vales, pois estes possuíam carros de guerra feitos de ferro. 20 Conforme Moisés havia prometido, Hebrom foi dada a Calebe, que expulsou de lá os três filhos de Enaque. 21 Já os benjamitas deixaram de expulsar os jebuseus que estavam morando em Jerusalém. Os jebuseus vivem ali com os benjamitas até o dia de hoje.
22 Os homens das tribos de José, por sua vez, atacaram Betel, e o Senhor estava com eles. 23 Enviaram espias a Betel, anteriormente chamada Luz. 24 Quando os espias viram um homem saindo da cidade disseram-lhe: “Mostre-nos como entrar na cidade, e nós lhe pouparemos a vida”. 25 Ele mostrou como entrar, e eles mataram os habitantes da cidade ao fio da espada, mas pouparam o homem e toda a sua família. 26 Ele foi, então, para a terra dos hititas, onde fundou uma cidade e lhe deu o nome de Luz, que é o seu nome até o dia de hoje.
27 Manassés, porém, não expulsou o povo de Bete-Seã, o de Taanaque, o de Dor, o de Ibleã, o de Megido, nem tampouco o dos povoados ao redor dessas cidades, pois os cananeus estavam decididos a permanecer naquela terra. 28 Quando Israel se tornou forte, impôs trabalhos forçados aos cananeus, mas não os expulsou completamente. 29 Efraim também não expulsou os cananeus que viviam em Gezer, mas os cananeus continuaram a viver entre eles. 30 Nem Zebulom expulsou os cananeus que viviam em Quitrom e em Naalol, mas estes permaneceram entre eles, e foram submetidos a trabalhos forçados. 31 Nem Aser expulsou os que viviam em Aco, Sidom, Alabe, Aczibe, Helba, Afeque e Reobe, 32 e, por esse motivo, o povo de Aser vivia entre os cananeus que habitavam naquela terra. 33 Nem Naftali expulsou os que viviam em Bete-Semes e em Bete-Anate; mas o povo de Naftali também vivia entre os cananeus que habitavam a terra, e aqueles que viviam em Bete-Semes e em Bete-Anate passaram a fazer trabalhos forçados para eles. 34 Os amorreus confinaram a tribo de Dã à serra central, não permitindo que descessem ao vale. 35 E os amorreus igualmente estavam decididos a resistir no monte Heres, em Aijalom e em Saalbim, mas, quando as tribos de José ficaram mais poderosas, eles também foram submetidos a trabalhos forçados. 36 A fronteira dos amorreus ia da subida de Acrabim[f] até Selá, e mais adiante.
Judges 1
Israel Fights the Remaining Canaanites
1 After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the Lord, “Who of us is to go up first to fight against the Canaanites?”
2 The Lord answered, “Judah shall go up; I have given the land into their hands.”
3 The men of Judah then said to the Simeonites their fellow Israelites, “Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours.” So the Simeonites went with them.
4 When Judah attacked, the Lord gave the Canaanites and Perizzitesinto their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek. 5 It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites. 6 Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
7 Then Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them.” They brought him to Jerusalem,and he died there.
8 The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.
9 After that, Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negevand the western foothills.10 They advanced against the Canaanites living in Hebron (formerly called Kiriath Arba) and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai. 11 From there they advanced against the people living in Debir(formerly called Kiriath Sepher).
12 And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.” 13 Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.
14 One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him[a] to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?”
15 She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.
16 The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms[b] with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.
17 Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonitestheir fellow Israelites and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed[c]the city. Therefore it was called Hormah.[d] 18 Judah also took[e] Gaza,Ashkelon and Ekron—each city with its territory.
19 The Lord was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had chariots fitted with iron. 20 As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak. 21 The Benjamites, however, did not drive outthe Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites.
22 Now the tribes of Josephattacked Bethel, and the Lord was with them.23 When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz), 24 the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, “Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well.” 25 So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared the man and his whole family. 26 He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz,which is its name to this day.
27 But Manasseh did notdrive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddoand their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land. 28 When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely. 29 Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer,but the Canaanites continued to live there among them. 30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor. 31 Nor did Asherdrive out those living in Akko or Sidon or Ahlab or Akzib or Helbah or Aphekor Rehob. 32 The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out. 33 Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them. 34 The Amoritesconfined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain. 35 And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres,Aijalon and Shaalbim, but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor. 36 The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass to Sela and beyond.
